The Buhid Mangyan are one of the eight indigenous groups residing in the mountainous regions of Mindoro, Philippines. Their name, “Buhid,” is derived from “Sambuhid,” meaning elevated land, a reflection of their ancestral connection to the highlands. With a rich cultural heritage and a unique way of life, the Buhid people have maintained their traditions for centuries, despite the challenges brought by modernization.

The origins of the Buhid Mangyan trace back to their ancestors, Manggat and Sayum-ay, who were believed to be the first people in their ancestral lands. They named the natural features surrounding them, creating a deep spiritual and historical bond with the land. The Buhid people have preserved their indigenous writing system, an ancient script recognized as a cultural treasure by UNESCO. This writing system is a vital part of their identity, ensuring that their history and traditions continue to be passed down through generations.

Our Commitment to the Buhid Mangyan
As we frequently returned home to visit family, acquired farmland, and connected with locals, city officials, and teachers, we saw firsthand the struggles the Buhid community faces. Drawing from some of the same challenges my wife experienced growing up, we felt a strong calling to give back and make a difference.
